{"id":939,"date":"2023-03-09T14:27:09","date_gmt":"2023-03-09T14:27:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/horizonpublicservice.org\/?p=939"},"modified":"2025-04-15T12:39:09","modified_gmt":"2025-04-15T12:39:09","slug":"what-our-fellows-have-been-working-on-march-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/horizonpublicservice.org\/what-our-fellows-have-been-working-on-march-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"What our fellows have been working on (March 2023)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Updated: Sep 25, 2023<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-fvba9\">We&#8217;re very excited to share a sample of what members of the cohort have worked on and achieved during their fellowship placements thus far, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Krystal Jackson, <\/strong>in her role at the Center for Security and Emerging Technology, published an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cset.georgetown.edu\/article\/compute-accounting-principles-can-help-reduce-ai-risks\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>article on compute accounting principles<\/strong><\/a> and had a talk on reinforcement learning for autonomous cyber defense accepted to the prestigious RSA Conference. Krystal was also accepted to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dayoneproject.org\/accelerators\/tech-equity-accelerator\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Day One Project\u2019s Racial Equity in Technology Policy Accelerator<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Jassi Pannu<\/strong>, working at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, published an article in <em>Science <\/em>on the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1126\/science.adf6020\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>oversight of risky research on pathogens<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>and a paper in the journal <em>Health Security <\/em>on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1089\/hs.2022.0098\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>programmable antivirals and just-in-time vaccines<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Michael Yang <\/strong>is currently serving on the Equity in Civic Technology project at the Center for Democracy and Technology. He\u2019s had two reports published on the center\u2019s website: <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cdt.org\/insights\/dispelling-myths-about-artificial-intelligence-for-government-service-delivery\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Risks from Personalized Learning Technologies<\/strong><\/a><em> <\/em>and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cdt.org\/insights\/dispelling-myths-about-artificial-intelligence-for-government-service-delivery\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Dispelling Myths About Artificial Intelligence for Government Service Delivery<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hadrien Pouget<\/strong>, during his placement at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, published an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lawfareblog.com\/eus-ai-act-barreling-toward-ai-standards-do-not-exist\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>article on EU AI standards<\/strong><\/a> for <em>Lawfare<\/em> and appeared on the ChinaTalk podcast to talk about <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/link.chtbl.com\/ChinaTalk\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>AI\u2019s regulatory future in the US, EU, and China<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aurelia Attal-Juncqua<\/strong>, a bio fellow at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, published a <a href=\"https:\/\/ndupress.ndu.edu\/Media\/News\/News-Article-View\/Article\/3262779\/assessing-the-trajectory-of-biological-research-and-development-in-the-russian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>research report on the biotech R&amp;D landscape in Russia<\/strong><\/a> with implications for bioweapons monitoring as well as an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkglobalhealth.org\/article\/strengthening-biological-weapons-conventions-contributions-global-health-security\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>article about strengthening the Biological Weapons Convention<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Katarina Watney, <\/strong>a bio fellow in the Department of Health and Human Services\u2019s Coordination Operations and Response Element (H-CORE), was selected to be part of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centerforhealthsecurity.org\/news\/center-news\/2023-01-12-ELBI-class-announcement.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Emerging Leaders in Biosecurity Initiative Class of 2023<\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"viewer-mma8\">We&#8217;re proud of the work that all of our fellows have undertaken so far.
